This request comes in the context of the formation of a new team called the "Crypto Task Force," led by Commissioner Hester Peirce, also known as "Crypto Mom." The primary goal of this team is to develop a clear and comprehensive regulatory framework for digital assets.
In January 2025, acting SEC Chairman Mark T. Uyeda announced the launch of this special team, emphasizing the need for a more structured approach to regulating the crypto market. Commissioner Peirce was appointed to lead this initiative, tasked with providing clarity on the application of federal securities laws in the context of crypto assets and recommending practical policy measures to encourage innovation while protecting investors.
The formation of the "Crypto Task Force" marks a significant shift from the SEC's previous approach, which focused on enforcement actions to apply laws. This new direction suggests an openness to collaboration and transparency in cryptocurrency regulation, aspects that have been eagerly awaited by the crypto community.
Meanwhile, the lawsuit between SEC and Coinbase, initiated in June 2023, continues to be a focal point in discussions about crypto regulation. The SEC accuses Coinbase of operating as an unregistered exchange, broker, and clearing agency concerning 13 specific crypto assets offered on its platform. The SEC also claims that Coinbase's staking program was offered and sold without proper registration, violating federal securities laws.
The crypto community looks hopefully toward the activities of the "Crypto Task Force," anticipating that it will bring clarity and facilitate growth and innovation in the sector.
